Quick answer: the Halloween party to go to in the Junction this year is the Halloween Special on Friday, October 30 at Mooi Space, 75 Pelham Ave, near Dupont and Symington. It has two rooms of house music from 10 PM to 3 AM, it's 19+, and tickets start at $20. It's a 5 to 10 minute walk from UP Express Bloor and Bloor GO, and about 15 minutes from Dundas West station.
How the neighbourhood fits together
People use "the Junction" for a wide stretch of the west end, and it helps to know the pieces.
- The Junction proper is Dundas St W around Keele, named for the railway lines that meet there.
- The Junction Triangle is the wedge south of it, boxed in by rail corridors, with Dupont St along the top and Sterling Road's converted factories in the middle.
- Carleton Village sits just north-west, around Symington Ave and Davenport.
Mooi Space at 75 Pelham Ave sits where those three meet, near Dupont and Symington. Dundas West station and the Bloor GO/UP Express stop are the transit anchors to the south.
The west end's Halloween night
Mooi Space is a multi-studio venue with an industrial warehouse feel: mezzanines, concrete floors, garage doors. For the Halloween Special it's fully decorated and split in two. Room 1 (400 capacity) has UK producer Iglesias playing a hybrid live set with Toronto's Nathan Barato and support from Aileen. Room 2 (200 capacity) is a vinyl hybrid room led by Kiinjo, with Pepe Calles, Thomas James, Parallell and Chance.
Between rooms there's a full bar with Steam Whistle and El Tequileño, a slushie machine, a photo booth, and a market of local independent vendors. Three Toronto crews host it: Premier Music Group, No Sleep Club and Secret Society.
Where to start the night
The Junction Triangle has some of the west end's best spots for a first drink, most of them a short walk or cab from Pelham Ave. Check hours before you go, since Halloween weekend hours can change.
- Sterling Road. The old factory strip south of Dupont. MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, is at 158 Sterling Rd in the former Tower Automotive building, with smaller galleries along the same road. Henderson Brewing is on Sterling too.
- Halo Brewery, also in the Junction Triangle, for a pint before you head up to Dupont.
- Bottega Volo, the bottle shop and bar from the Bar Volo team, in the Clock Factory building at Dupont and Campbell.
- The Gaslight, a neighbourhood bar near Sterling Road known for cocktail pitchers.
- Farmhouse Tavern, in the Junction Triangle, for dinner with an Ontario-sourced menu.
Ontario bars stop serving at 2 AM, so a long pre-game eats into your night. The cheapest Halloween Special ticket is the $20 entry-before-11 PM tier, which is a good reason to keep dinner short.
Getting there from the rest of the west end
- From Bloor and Dundas West: Dundas West station (Line 2) is about a 15-minute walk.
- From Union or the airport: UP Express or the Kitchener GO line to Bloor, then 5 to 10 minutes on foot.
- By bus: the 127 Davenport and 168 Symington stop nearby.
- By car: use 75 Pelham Ave as the drop-off.
